Obituary for Donald A Powel

Donald A. Powel, a devoted father and husband, passed away on July 9, 2021 after a long struggle with his declining health. His children and wife were by his side in his final days while listening to his favorite jams.

Donald was born and raised in Linden, New Jersey and excelled in baseball and cracking jokes. He went on to play at Athens College in Alabama and pitched no hitters and shutouts throughout his career. He continued his graduate education at Eastern Kentucky University before starting a 38-year long career with the State of New Jersey, Office of the Public Defender, retiring in 2014. Donald developed a green thumb over the years and took particular pride in his delicious San Marzano tomatoes. He also loved his pets, especially his cat Sammie.

Throughout the final years Donald received exceptional at-home care provided by his caregivers Denise, Bert, Treena and his nurse, Carrie (Serenity Hospice). Donald’s unmatched wit and sense of humor, as well as his one liners will be fondly missed. It was comforting to have that humor surface even during the hardest of times.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Linda Powel, his son Calder Powel, and his daughter Eva (Powel) Villalobos and her spouse Nestor Villalobos. In addition to his nieces and nephews, he is survived by his sister Eileen Kornas and his brother Daniel Powel.
