Obituary for Dorothy "Susan" Darrah
Dorothy “Susan” Darrah was born on June 25th,1948 in Lambertville, NJ. Sue, Suzie, Dottie Sue (known by all) passed away on Wednesday April 27,2022 at her home, in Lambertville, with her family by her side.
A lifelong resident of Lambertville, and surrounding towns, Sue graduated from Cathedral High School in Trenton in 1966. She went on to become a fierce culinary leader in the river towns of Lambertville and New Hope, at a time when there were very few female chefs in the kitchens. While spending time in France, she was immersed in country and culture rich in culinary history. Absorbing that knowledge and bringing it back to the states, Sue was able to showcase her talents as owner of a restaurant/hotel while mentoring numerous young chefs. Being such a lover of the English language, she left the hospitality industry for her second act in academia.
Sue received a bachelor’s degree from Rider University, and a master’s degree in English from The College of New Jersey where she also taught part time. Additionally, she attained an All But Dissertation (ABD) status in English from Lehigh University. For more than 30 years, she advanced as a faculty member and held several administrative positions at Bucks County Community College: English Professor, Chair of the English Department, and the Director of the Student Tutoring Center, all as an avid champion and professor of Woman’s Studies.
Sue enjoyed spending time with her family in Lavallette, NJ, on the beach, especially with all her nieces, great nieces, and nephews. She loved Ireland and had visited many times. She was an avid reader with her favorites including James Joyce and Agatha Christie, although she also loved a great British Murder Mystery (book or series). She could always complete the New York Times crosswords in record time and enjoyed doing so with a jelly donut and cup of good coffee. She never missed an episode of Jeopardy. She loved gardening and hosting dinner parties for her family and friends with food that rivaled any fine New York City restaurant. She loved hanging out with friends at the Boathouse in Lambertville, where many locals have fond memories of their “spirited” conversations with her.
She is the daughter of the late Charles and Margaret Curley Slack, sister of the late John and James Slack. She is survived by her daughter Cassandra “Jenny” Spears, her two brothers and their wives, Dennis and Joyce Slack, Charles and Jill Slack, and her nieces and nephews that she loved so very dearly.
The wake will be held Tuesday May 3rd, 2022, from 5 - 8 p.m., with her memorial beginning at 7 p.m., at the Garefino Funeral Home, 12 North Franklin Street, Lambertville, NJ.
