Obituary for Sister Marie K Conaughton

Lambertville: Sister Marie K. Conaughton, Sister of the Order of the Most Holy Trinity, passed away Wednesday January 5, 2022 at St. Joseph’s Senior Home in Woodbridge, NJ, at the age of 90.

Daughter of the late Gerald K. Conaughton and Mabel Dirlam Conaughton, Sister Marie was born and raised in Carbondale, PA. She graduated from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Carbondale, PA (1952),
Marywood College, Scranton, PA, with a BS in Education (1957), and an MS from University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education (1962). In the field of Nursing she served as a staff nurse and an instructor at
schools of Nursing. For a number of years she was the Acting Director of Nursing at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and a Graduate Student Practicum coordinator at Villanova University. In 1983, retiring from nursing, she joined the Order of the Most Holy Trinity and took the name Sister Marie of the Incarnation. In the fall of 1983, she was instrumental in establishing The Jesus School as a part of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church including the teachings of the Catholic Faith in the daily education of preschoolers and kindergarteners. For over 30 years Sister Marie was the Director of The Jesus School until it closed in 2015.

During the years at the Jesus School, her passion for the children was evident. By following the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, which relies heavily on the Montessori Method of education, it allowed children to have
a personal encounter with the living God. She held Catholic Education to a high standard and expected only the best from her staff. Every year she would practice tirelessly with the children recreating the birth of Jesus
through the annual Christmas Pageant. Not only did she engage the children, but staff and families were involved as she strived to achieve perfection. In addition, she made sure the Seder meal was an annual
experience along with regular Atrium visits. Sister Marie was a treasure to know.

Rite of reception with visitation will be held Wednesday, January 12th, from 5:00 to 7:00pm at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 44 Bridge St. Lambertville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated
Thursday, January 13th, at 10:30 am at St. John’s. Private graveside services will be held in Mother of Sorrows Cemetery in Finch Hill, PA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Evangelist Church, 13 N. Main St. Lambertville, NJ 08530.
